Picture Post #3 - Resurrection Sunday
Happy late Easter! I'm thankful that God didn't have to rely on me to accomplish the Resurrection. I tried to make resurrection cookies and failed miserably!! However, that won't stop me from posting what we did do (I'm planning to try again and see if I can accomplish the task!).
First, you take some whole pecans and place them in a baggy and let the kids beat them until they are broken into small pieces. Explain that after Jesus was arrested, he was beaten by Roman soldiers (read John 19:1-3).
Next, let each child smell the vinegar and put one teaspoon into the mixing bowl. Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross, he was given vinegar to drink (read John 19:28-30).
Add egg whites. Eggs represent life. Explain that Jesus gave his life to give us life (read John 10:10-11)-The pecans aren't supposed to be in the bowl yet - I think that's why it flopped!
Sprinkle a little salt into each child's hand. Let them taste it and brush the rest into the bowl. Explain this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus' followers and the bitterness of our sin (read Luke 23:26-28).
So far, the ingredients are not very appetizing. Add one cup of sugar. Explain that the sweet part of the story is that Jesus died because he loves us. He wants us to know him and belong to him (Read Psalm 34:8 and John 3:16).
Beat ingredients with a mixer on high. Explain that the color white represents the purity in God's eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus (read Isaiah 1:18 and John 3:1-3).
Now here's where my story falls apart - thankfully God's never falls apart! So, I'll finish up with words since nothing else turned out. If you want the full recipe, go here.
Fold in broken nuts. Drop by teaspoons onto a wax paper covered cookie sheet. Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus' body was laid (read Matthew 27:57-60).
Put the cookie sheet in the oven, close the door and turn the oven off. Give each child a piece of tape and seal the oven door. Explain that Jesus' tomb was sealed (read Matthew 27:65-66).
Tell the kids it's time to go to bed! Explain that they may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight. Jesus' followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed (read John 16:20 and 22).
The next morning, open the oven and give everyone a cookie. Notice the cracked surface and take a bite. The cookies are hollow! On the first Easter, Jesus' followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty. He has risen!!! (Read Matthew 28:1-9)
I just love the reprsentation in this story and the kids enjoyed following along. Here's a picture of the kids before church on Easter. I'd like to put a disclaimer that I was already gone so Daddy took the picture. I would have tried to fix the hair a little more and gotten some better smiles!!
