Last week in ELO (homeschool coop classes), Jessica did a presentation on Grover Cleveland (they are studying the presidents. She did such a great job; I was so proud of her! Did you know that Grover Cleveland’s first name is really Stephen?
Stephen Grover Cleveland is the only American president to serve two non – consecutive terms. He was the 22nd and 24th president.
He was the winner of the popular vote for president three times – in 1884, 1888, and 1892. However, he still did not win the presidency. This is due to the fact that his opponent received more Electoral College votes.
Cleveland was the only president to be married In the White House and was the first to have a child born there.
He had 5 children Ruth, Esther, Marion, Richard, and Francis.
Cleveland answered the White House phone personally and he used his veto powers 584 times during his two terms. It was the most of any other president but Franklin Roosevelt, who served longer than Cleveland.
Cleveland‘s portrait was on the U.S. $1,000 bill from 1928 to 1946 and his portrait is going to be on two separate dollar coins in 2012.
