School Conversations

I'm amazed that my 5 year old can read amazingly well without really any teaching from me. He's been able to read for over a year (obviously when I was teaching Jessica he was paying attention). However, I am equally amazed that we had a conversation like this this morning:

Me: What is this a picture of?

Eric: A fish.

Me: What is the vowel sound that goes with fish?

Eric: Uh, f?

Me: Eric, we just went over the vowels, is ‘f’ a vowel?

Eric: No.

Me: What is the vowel sound?

Eric: Uh, ‘sh’?

Me: Heavy sigh, head bent, thinking what in the world is going on!! Eric, how do you spell fish?

Eric: F- I – H – S.

Me: I was fine with the spelling since he got the F-I correct. So, I said YES! F-I! Eric, what is the vowel sound?

Eric: Uh, it’s not ‘e’.

Me: Arms up in the air. I finally excused him and said when he was ready to think a little and work with me, he could come back!

So, about 10 minutes later, he came back and we basically went over the same stuff as above, but he was able to figure the ‘I’ relatively quickly (we didn’t have to go through the ‘f’ and ‘sh’ as vowels first!)

I-YI-YI – how can a boy who can read relatively easily at the 1st grade level, struggle so much with this!

On days like this, I have to remember the reason I'm homeschooling!

Back to Updating! It's now June!

Since July has passed and now it's August, I thought it's about time to update the goings on from June! Ready, set, go! We signed the kids up for tennis camp. It's a fun way to be exposed to tennis for little amounts of money! Annual swimming lessons. The kids are pretty good at swimming - but we just like to keep improving upon their skills. We went to the Adrian Peterson football camp in Tyler. It was very hot, but Eric had a lot of fun! We were invited to go boating with some friends! The kids had a great time tubing and trying their hand at skiing. Had fun with friends. Our friends, the Taylors came to visit! And, hopefully you have made it this far, as the the most important part of June - my first born turned 11. Oh my - where does the time go? Thanks for reading about our month of June! Mom

I can't believe it's been a little over 10 years since I last posted. Sometimes I wish I would have kept up with the blog, it's a nice record of the time! A lot has happened in those 10 years, but I'm here to document my mom! It's been 12 years since my dad died. Overall, my mom has done really well. She stayed in her own home for about 6 years and then she moved to an independent retirement community. Although she didn't like it at first, she made some great friends and I believe thoroughly enjoyed living there. The last two or three years have been tough on her. Her health has declined somewhat, she uses a walker, has aches and pains, and has taken several falls. She's been so fortunate that none of those falls have resulted in any broken bones and overall, she's recovered well from them. However, this last fall that she took, has taken its toll on her. We Interrupt The Blogging Update . . .

for a current blog post! I had the privilege of going to Fort Hood this week to see my cousin off to Iraq. For several reasons, her mom and dad were not able to come down (Hannah went up to see them the weekend before) and since we are only 4 hours from Fort Hood and family is everything to me, I couldn't let Hannah be deployed without family present. I am so proud of her for choosing to serve our country! It was a very heart wrenching experience. I cried at the thought of Hannah being over there and it was terribly sad to see husbands and wives and fathers and children saying goodbye. Please remember all the troops in your prayers! Here are some of the pictures. I think Eric and Jaelyn were a good distraction! They didn't think the duffel bags were so heavy!
